I can’t believe it ya’ll, after months of searching I have found one of the best comedy horror films that I’ve seen in a long, long time. I’m serious. I would even be as bold as to say that I enjoyed this film just as much if not more than the other classic, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. The Babysitter is a 2017 teen black comedy horror film directed by McG and stars Samara Weaving (swoon), Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee (obsessed), Robbie Amell, and Bella Thorne (?!?). So this film already has an amazing cast right? Well just wait, cause there’s so much more. Our hero is the poor bullied pre-teen Cole (Lewis) who has no one other than his incredibly hot babysitter Bee (Weaving) to defend his weird ass. Bee and Cole spend an epic evening making pizza, watching an homemade drive-through movie, and of course, having a dance party. Sounds like a fun but exhausting time, right? Well, that didn’t stop Cole from staying up via peer pressure from his friend and spying on whatever juicy secrets Bee hides at night. Which of course, in a stereotypical babysitter movie should involve explicit sexy times right? Cole sneaky sneaks just above the guardrail just in time to see Bee and co. play a very naughty spin-the-bottle. Now this is where things get crazy. Bee unfortunately ends up stabbing poor nerdy Samuel for her friends, aka fellow satanic cult members, to harvest for their blood ritual. I know, it's a wild transition. Panicking and terrified for this life, Cole must now fend off Bee and her cult and try to survive the night. Harvest the blood of the innocent to prepare for the following sacrificial spoilers: In my mind this is the perfect horror comedy movie not just because of how stupid hilarious the plot points are or how incredibly well edited and stylized the first act is, but also because of how well the story ends up tying together at the end. There are several minor points that are presented in the first act, i.e. the placement of the knife that Cole uses to try to fix his toy car, the fact that he was trying to improve the aerodynamics of the car so that it has a more epic barrel roll flip, and the even the less notable scene that shows his mother fixing her glass award in their vestibule table. All of these moments, no matter how notable, all come back during the more horror packed acts of the film that result in a *chefs kiss*. (Honestly, nothing gets me more excited whenever I’m watching any type of film than seeing all the elements tie in together at the end. What can I say, I love a good cohesive story.) There’s something strangely poetic in seeing all the classic horror movie victims, i.e. the jock, the hot girl (formally the slut because we don’t slut shame here), the nerd, et. all, all eventually become victims not because they were doomed from the start, but because they stupidly chose to join in a satanic cult and murder a 12-year old boy. Yes there are a couple of tropes that the film could have easily strayed away from, such as the first victim of the cult gang of course being the only Black character. (Seriously, King Bach is all you get) But overall, seeing a literal child have to both grow the fuck up and slowly take everyone down was insanely fun to see. Overall, I’m excited for more movies like this to come out. There’s been such a scarcity of stupid silly, horror movies lately and I need another fix badly. Unhinged goofy murder vibes: 5/5
