Ready or not, we’re going to get into this review. The 2019 film begins during one of the happiest moments of a long-term couple - their wedding night. Samara Weaving and her dazzlingly rich new beau are the quintessential Hollywood couple, rich, attractive, and full of nothing but love for each other. Their matrimony of course does not come without its little quirks as the two are invited to choose a game to play along with the entire Le Domas family. Unfortunately for Samara, she just so happens to draw the cursed “hide-and-seek” card. Thinking that this would be a simple child's game, she is eager to participate and to be fully initiated with the high class family. The night quickly turns from its warm, light-hearted mood to plain murder as the Le Domas family begins to slowly pick off their mansion’s inhabitants in their relentless search for shedding Samara’s blood in the name of Satan. The entire film itself is an action-packed and at times, surprisingly lighthearted, survival adventure as we see whether or not Samara will be able to pull off one of life's greatest challenges - surviving her in-laws. Personally, I thought that this film was a delightful surprise. Between the graphic gory moments and very, very well timed jokes, this film managed to keep me fully entranced in its ability to balance such contrasting elements. As a horror fanatic who tends to shy away from the more predictable “survival” film genre, I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well orchestrated underdog story that's peppered with the occasional twist. Overall Spooky Rating: 4/5
